Construction Progress Continues at CIBC SQUARE | UrbanToronto

While work is virtually complete at CIBC SQUARE's 49-storey South Tower in Toronto's Financial District, work at the office complex's 50-storey North Tower is still at an early stage, with the tower's core just reaching grade level in May, and more recently, with excavation of the surrounding pit nearing completion.

On the completed South Tower, more signage around its crown was being installed last week, and is continuing: below, brackets to hold another CIBC logo are in place on the north-facing side of the building.

An update from the construction crew notes that excavation is expected to be completed on the eastern half of the site by the end of July. Meanwhile, at the west end of the site, footings, columns, underground mechanical, and slab-on-grade work are progressing across levels P3 and P5. Preparation for the foundation of the fifth and final crane near the Yonge Street end of the pit will be commencing soon as well, and is expected to arrive on-site by late August, and be fully assembled shortly thereafter.

Since it reached grade back in May, the forming of the Tower core walls has progressed to the third level slab as of last week.

The next step in the superstructure is the placement of twelve large, structural steel nodes atop the Level 3 core wall. The first of these has been installed, as seen pictured below.

Another step in the construction process to look forward to soon is at the west side of the site where enabling works for the foundation of the bridge between the North Tower and Union Station are anticipated to begin sometime in August. Immediately south of the new tower and above the Union Station rail corridor, crews have completed the installation of the structural steel and steel decking for the second phase of the overbuild park. The concrete topping work will eventually follow, with the area being used as a construction materials staging area for the moment.

Once open, the office complex by Hines and Ivanhoé Cambridge will stand out at the south end of Downtown Toronto's Financial District. Designed by UK-based WilkinsonEyre Architects with Toronto’s Adamson Associates, the complex will consist of a matched pair of "diamond-encrusted" towers that will stand almost perpendicular to each other.
